Hayhoe's temperature reconstruction

Tom Nelson pointed out this interesting temperature reconstruction, sourced from Katharine Hayhoe's new book. I thought it might be the Marcott paper, but a direct comparison suggests not. I wonder where it comes from?

I would like to add it to the list of exhibits that one day will be in museums of science around the world to show sloppy shoddy spinning 'science' in climate alarmism

I would rather hope that it would be he corpse laying the museum with a title of 'The body of one of the 21st centuries climate scammers' . A bit like Ned Kelly's bits in Auss

Aha perhaps her graph was given by God ? .... like the Golden tablets that he gave to the Mormons
(unfortunately those Golden tablets that contained the history of the white people that lived in America at the time of Jesus cannot be seen, as after showing them to the founders of the church "the Lord took them back")

Entropic man

I'm glad you asked

Ice core proxies are by their nature highly limited in their geographic spread, tree rings are not a thermometer and anyway only record a signal in summer and boreholes actually show a temperature increase since 1500.

They can not pick up the annual and decadal variability due to the nature of their 50 year centring and smoothing.

Ok, from the figure sources (search "alley" in the Amazon page) the handle of the stick appears to be a composite of three ice core (Vostok, GISP2, EPICA) and three sediment core (Lea (2003),Stott (2004), Zhao (2004)) reconstructions similar to this Wikipedia graph composite (black). Then it is simply spliced with a smoothed HadCRUT3 (you can see actually a break in the graph ~1820).

She really seems to like splicing. In Figure 7 (also on the page 26 in the presentation linked above) she has happily spliced pre 1850 part of the Mann & Jones (2003) NH reconstruction with HadCRUT3. What a clown.

Dr. Hayhoe recently came through Houston peddling her book to a wealthy increasingly liberal Church. I was unable to attend her sales pitch, but the outcome is this congregation is that it looks she sold a lot of her books for an adult education/study program. I wonder if anyone had the guts to stand up and point out that Christian tradition heavily frowns on false teachers?
She and her hubbie really are following the classic pattern of fear mongering prophets/profits.

Is the time-scale really designed for Young Earth Creationists?

An ice core has O16/O18 ratio which reflects evaporation rates, and hence temperatures, across large areas of ocean.

We should all be rejoicing that Ms Hayhoe produces such crass, abject drivel. The poorer and wierder her depiction of climate science, the more likely people are to see it for the nonsense it is.

The fact that climate scientists are asking that activists be less alarmist (eg. 11 Degree Myles Allen now asking for more realism), is a demonstration that severe alarmism has become too ridiculous for mainstream alarmism. ho ho.

Henry makes a good point about the timescale.

According tho the calculations of Bishop Usher, who counted the various "begats" in the old testament, the world is 4406 years old.

Of course, by stretching the timescale that far back, she has corrupted even the corrupt sources she uses (noted by Jean S above)

Entries man

The graphic at the start of the article was referencing land temperatures and so did my comments. Ice cores can not be used to provide global land temperatures and are mostly useful for demonstrating possible amplification, not precise temperature measurements outside the arra from where they were gathered

Given the graphs are on totally different scales, it's a masterpiece of misinformation...

@Jean S yes if you zoom in there is big gap in the red line
wish I knew what you meant by search "alley" in the Amazon page ..ah maybe reading the on line parts of the book and she has actually put references for the graph in there.

CO2 graph looks similar to that for the Law Dome Ice Cores( last 1000 years bit)

- Those Hayhoe graphs are the kind of spliced dirty trick graphs that I expect to see at Skepticalscience.org
