The (missing) story of O

The Register is reporting that Lord Oxburgh forgot to declare another competing interest:

Lord Oxburgh, a geologist by training and the former scientific advisor to the Ministry of Defence, was appointed to lead the enquiry into the scientific aspects of the Climategate scandal on Monday. But Oxburgh is also a director of GLOBE, the Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment.

"Who?", I hear you ask...

GLOBE may be too obscure to merit its own Wikipedia entry, but that belies its wealth and influence. It funds meetings for parliamentarians worldwide with an interest in climate change, and prior to the Copenhagen Summit GLOBE issued guidelines (pdf) for legislators. Little expense is spared: in one year alone, one peer - Lord Michael Jay of Ewelme - enjoyed seven club class flights and hotel accommodation, at GLOBE's expense. There's no greater love a Parliamentarian can give to the global warming cause. And in return, Globe lists Oxburgh as one of 23 key legislators.

And it gets worse:

GLOBE's worldwide secretary Elliott Morley and its British branch secretary David Chaytor were two of three MPs to face criminal charges last week. Brent MP Barry Gardiner, co-chairman of the GLOBE Dialogue on Land Use Change & Ecosystems claimed for a second home eight miles from Westminster, and worked the system for £200,000.

In 2007 Oxburgh won a Lifetime Achievement Award from Climate Change Capital. The judges said they were also impressed by “his very high ethical standards"

It's becoming abundantly clear that rather like MPs and their expenses, there are different rules for the privileged gentry and the rest of we peasants.
How much longer can this joke be allowed to continue?
Surely the time has arrived for a senior law maker to step in and take hold of this chicken by the neck and squeeze it to elicit the truth.
Only in climate change could the situation have deteriorated to such a level.
Do these people have any shred of decency and honesty?

Is anybody surprised by the goings on of those people of influence and positions of honour endowed by our government?

Corruption is endemic at the top.

I think this quote from The Register piece is quite evocative:

'One insider, who declined to be named, described Oxburgh's appointment as "like putting Dracula in charge of the Blood Bank".'

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/24/climategate_oxburgh_globe/

There are very large sums of money and very large opportunities for influence in the AGW game, and so it is not surprising that curious things are found when associated surfaces are scratched. If I can continue with another cliche, the climategate emails were the tip of an iceberg. Furthermore, to finally ruin my nascent reputation as a literary genius, the exponential growth in revelations about AGW and the IPCC et al (including the phony 'enquiries' here there and everywhere) is beginning to make the Hockey Stick uptick look like quite a modest fluctuation. Where can we find someone handy with graphics to illustrate this dramatic surge, the likes of which is perhaps unprecedented, and reveals an imminent danger to the integrity of science unless we take action now! What will our grandchildren say if we do nothing!

Whilst the alarmist profiteers and rent-seekers claim that the world is now such that no establishment adjudicator could be found who is not involved with CO2 trading, solar double glazing etc., from the same people, we also get the claim that there is a deep and disturbingly powerful unnamed force keeping the public from the true path.
We also seem to have a plethora of get togethers by the science and media great green and good, all tapping their chins and wondering why their credibility is shrinking. Should we tell them?

Mar 24, 2010 at 10:38 AM | Unregistered CommenterSteve2

Shocked I tell you, just shocked that there would be corruption and stacking of the decks. It's such a perfect hoax, pay government scientist to control the weather by reporting what these very same 'scientists' say. In fact this crap has been going on for a very long time. DDT, anyone want to talk about the 10s of millions that died of malaria for this liberal hoax?

When our politicians were at Copenhagen were they representing us, or GLOBE?

It was GLOBE, in league with the Club of Rome, which came up with the plans that were presented at Copenhagen.

GLOBE is effectively a backroom quango of elected representatives. They collude between themselves then use international bodies like the UN to present *their* ideas to the wider world and can then return to their own nations claiming the UN has had an idea and it'd be jolly good of us to follow it.

From the UN's point of view it substantially reduces their workload if they go along with it - GLOBE thrashes out the plan, all the UN has to do is convince the minor nations. What GLOBE get in return is the UN taking the criticism not them when it wasn't the UN's idea in the first place.

It keeps accountability at least one step removed from where it should lie, which inevitably leads to poor feedback on decision making which results in poor decision making.

Some more info on GLOBE. There is a GLOBE UK All Party Group in Westminster. They have paid for overseas trips and made submissions to committees.

Odd how Joan Ruddock's biography here mentions GLOBE International but not her membership of the Socialist Environment and Resources Association. Must have left her position as VP I guess...

Unfortunately, Britain has developed a way of setting up enquiries so that they don't get at the truth. This is effective from a politician's point of view because there are now so many scandals that by the time the enquiry reports, most journalists will be preoccupied by something else. If necessary, they can also choose "a good day for releasing bad news".

Britain is barely a democracy any more - it is just run for private interests.

Part of speech by Lord Oxburgh on COP15, the Lords, 14th Jan 2010, "We in this country must continue to attach high priority to using less energy in a whole range of ways and, in addition to reducing our overall energy consumption, to obtain our energy from more sustainable sources. On top of that, as long as we are obliged to use fossil fuels, if we are to avoid calamitous climate change, we have to prevent the emissions from those fuels escaping into the atmosphere. The means of doing that is by carbon capture and storage. This country had a lead in that technology but one has to admit that through a combination of procrastination and lack of commitment we have allowed a number of other countries to overtake us. I declare an interest as the honorary president of the Carbon Capture & Storage Association."

Here is Stephen Byers declaring an overseas visit in the MPs registers of interests.

Overseas visits
16-20 February 2009, to Washington for meetings with the Administration, House of Representatives and Senate to discuss climate change. The cost of travel and accommodation paid by the promoters of GLOBE. (Registered 26 March 2009)
Name of donor: GLOBE International
Address of donor: 11 Dartmouth Street, Westminster, London SW1H 9BN.
Amount of donation (or estimate of the probable value): £2118.58
Destination of visit: Washington, USA.
Date of visit: 9 - 11 September 2009
Purpose of visit: to meet with members of the administration, Senate and House of Representatives to discuss climate change and environmental sustainability in my role as President of GLOBE International.

Note the donation of £2118.58 from GLOBE International.

For someone who will not get out of bed for less than £5000 per day, £2118.58 for a trip to Washington represents tremendous value for money.

Are we being told the truth, the whole truth about the cost of this trip, after all this could be just an 'estimate of the probable value'?

According to the Globe website,
Oxburgh is "Vice-Chair GLOBE UK "

According to London Zoo, where he gave a talk in May 2009,

Lord Ron Oxburgh is Vice-Chair GLOBE UK and Vice-President GLOBE International

So he is second in command to the President of GLOBE International:

Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP

Now that's a familiar name, haven't we heard something about him in the news recently?

The worst thing about all this, though, is the Royal Society. Rather than standing aloof from all this, opposing it, they are a party to all this stinking corruption, and no doubt sniggering at how clever they have been to stitch up everyone in this scam. But the Royal Society has been a stinking pit of corruption for 300 years, since Newton, in fact. The concepts of ethics, fair play, respect and conflicts of interest are completely alien to the Royal Society.

As an example of how stupid they are, they put out a policy document just before the Copenhagen summit entitled 'Preventing Dangerous Climate Change'

http://royalsociety.org/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=4294969323

The second sentence in the policy document says "There is no such thing as ‘safe’ climate change." So, by this definition ALL changes of climate, natural or otherwise are by definition "Dangerous Climate Change". This is affirmed later in the document: "Any level of climate change will be dangerous..."

So, next time you hear the Royal Society, or Ed Miliband, or any other climate scientist talking about 'Dangerous Climate Change', remember that, by the definition of our National Academy of Science, even the smallest natural variations are classes as 'dangerous'.

That this is utterly fallacious or meaningless is obvious by considering that the climate 20, 50, 100 years ago was different from today, and will be different in the future whether man is on the planet or not, so by the definition of the Royal Society they must have been and must always be 'dangerously' different climates as well. In fact all climates at all times in all places must be classified as being in the throes of 'dangerous' change.

Peddling meaningless and dangerous twaddle is what our National Academy of Sciences has been reduced to.

No finer praise for the work of Globe International.

“ I congratulate GLOBE on the work that you have done over the past few years,
resulting in GLOBE becoming one of the most influential forums in the international
debate. I would also like to express my gratitude to all who have created in GLOBE a
forum for legislators from key countries to come together and make such a big impact
on the climate change debate”, Former UK Prime Minister Rt Hon Tony Blair

It seems that GLOBE represents an attraction to our elected, non-elected and past-elected 'taxis for hire'................................... but where do GLOBE gets its funds from to pay all these fares?

Mar 24, 2010 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterMac

This gets more and more interesting.

From GLOBE International's own website.

http://www.globeinternational.org/content.php?id=7:54:0:0:0

It is a body that consists of 100 legislators and 25 business leaders.

From SourceWatch.

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=GLOBE_International

Quote: "On its website GLOBE International states that it 'receives support from Governments, Inter-governmental bodies such as the World Bank and also from corporate membership of GLOBE's policy themed Dialogues.' However, it does not publicly disclose on its website who it receives support from."

So we have an organisation of politicians and businessmen, apparently funded by the taxpayer and certain businesses (?), we don't know exactly how much and who by, who are actively pursuing 'effective' action on climate change.

A major part of this effective action by GLOBE International is to get an agreement on rainforest deforestation, the UN's REDD forest credits scheme, that will result in $billions from western donor countries being filtered thru middlemen, eg WWF, to third world countries that will result in massive profiteering with no benefits in a reduction of CO2 emissions, the rainforest or those indigenous people who rely on the rainforest.

My dears we are unravelling a huge scam involving our elected officials one that is being done in our name.

Mar 24, 2010 at 1:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterMac

There are 20 something visits paid for by GLOBE that have so far been declared. If you search this Electoral Commission register for donor name 'globe' it lists them.

A search on Companies House reveals THE GLOBAL LEGISLATORS ORGANISATION (GLOBE) LIMITED were formerly known as "G8+5 Climate Change Dialogue", details of which can be found here.

In 2007 they received substantial funding from the Canadian Government. I wonder if Canadian taxpayers would be pleased they are paying for foreign politicians to enjoy jollies around the globe. I expect many more Governments are paying into the coffers too.

The name GLOBE itself is a bit of a distraction. It is an acronym for Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment.

I love google, me.

NO 10 quote
Our confidence that the Earth is warming is taken from multiple sources of
evidence and not only the HadCRUT temperature record, which CRU scientists
contribute to. The same warming trend is seen in two independent analyses
carried out in the United States, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) and the Goddard Institute of Space Studies at the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). These analyses draw
on the same pool of temperature data as HadCRUT, but use different
methodologies to produce analyses of temperature change through time.
Further evidence of this warming is found in data from instruments on
satellites, and in trends of declining arctic sea ice and rising sea levels.

Science is giving us an increasingly clear picture of the risks we face from
climate change. With more research, we can better understand those risks,
and how to manage them. That is why the Government funds a number of
institutions, including the University of East Anglia, to carry out research
into climate change science.

So they are relying on NASA data that has already (by NASA's own admission)
been accepted as inferior, see:

important because there are 4 temperature data sets worldwide (CRU (East

discredited, yet they are the basis of the planned expenditure of trillions

Mar 24, 2010 at 10:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterMingmong

ACOPS - Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea - would appear to be big in the world of 'Environmental Security' of the sea, whatever that means!

Mar 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterMingmong

Lord Hunt seems to be something to do with ACOPs too, so that may explain it (see the latest GLOBE piece to understand why Lord H is relevant).

Mar 24, 2010 at 10:56 PM | Registered CommenterBishop Hill

Interestingly, it would seem that ACOPS has a wider definition of 'environmental' than would perhaps be generally accepted! More 'world government' aspirations!

'the International Conference for the Initiative of
Environmental Security of Seas and Oceans was held in Tripoli, Libya, 23-25 July 2005 as the
first of three international conferences on the Ocean Security Initiative. It was organized by the
Advisory Committee on Protection of Seas and Oceans (ACOPS) under the patronage of the
Gadhafi International Foundation for Charities Associations and the Environmental General
Authority of Great Jamahiriya. Ocean environment and security experts from 26 countries
representing governments, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector participated.
The conference addressed the environmental security issues relating to the seas and oceans from
a broad perspective ranging from illegal immigration to transnational organized crime.
Participants stressed that international and trans-institutional collective action was required to
assure compliance with international terms and standards for improved ocean environmental
security. (July 2005)'
