Ecocide - Josh 101

Sounds daft? I can think of a good example...

Forgive me if I am wrong, but is that red glow from burning gearbox oil?

Jun 2, 2011 at 10:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterPhillip Bratby

PB, yup.

Josh
Have you seen the French heavy metal band Gojira?

You should offer to do album coverart for their next one. :)

(their music is borderline ok, but they have songs about global warming and whales)

No more jokes about gearboxes please, modern mills do not use them.
Theyvare still useless however.

Shub, nice. I like whales.

Bella - you are mistaken re: gearboxes.

For example:

Yet another cracker from the master cartoonist!

@ Philip Bratby

The red glow could be angry backradiation from climate activists with high emissivity.

The banning of DDT. 100 million dead. Ecocide.

Is punishment for crimes against Gaia being nailed to the blades of a turbine on top of a hill?

Jun 3, 2011 at 4:42 AM | Unregistered Commenterdlb

Beautiful, Josh!

And how much critical habitat is displaced by those massive underground concrete pedestals? My friends, who will stand up for the earthworms!

Jun 3, 2011 at 5:34 AM | Unregistered CommenterJPeden

This must be the best ever cartoon from Josh. It shows the 21st century equivalent of the dark satanic mills of old.

Don't forget the last episode of The Wind Farm Wars tonight at 7pm on BBC2. Unfortunately it does not (so I'm told) manage to fit in the results of the latest ‘Pyrrhic Victory’ of Mike Hulme at the Court of Appeal. But that would be revealing the "final outcome" (or not).

Jun 3, 2011 at 6:39 AM | Unregistered CommenterPhillip Bratby

That would look good on a t-shirt. A mobile conversation piece. Hope to see it here soon: http://cartoonsbyjosh.spreadshirt.co.uk/

@jpeden

Never fear, James Delingpole is standing up for earthworms:

Here's a link to to what Mike Hulme has to say about his "Pyrrhic Victory" - although I think "moral victory" would perhaps be more accurate - from 2 days ago:

http://www.denbrookvalley.co.uk/index.html

To quote:

Judgement for my Appeal in relation to the Den Brook Amplitude Modulation (AM) noise conditions was handed down by three Lord Justices at the Court of Appeal (CoA) last week, 26th May 2011.

Whilst on the face of it my appeal was dismissed, i.e. the Judges determined that the Inspector had not erred in law, the wider outcome was pretty much a total success; save only for the costs Barbara and I have necessarily endured over the past years.

New cover for the next print run of HSI..?

Josh said (on his site):

"One day I will try blogging ;-)"

Bloggers are 2-a-penny: the number of cartoonists in the area is severely limitted (by lack of skill)

Obviously, you will do whatever you want but don't give up the cartoons!!

Paul Boyce:

It was more than a moral victory. It is a real victory. For the first time ever, there is an enforceable condition covering AM noise. This will have serious implications for future wind farms, as there is now a precedent to set the same conditions. For existing wind farms, people such as Jane and Julien Davis, who had been driven from there home in Lincolnshire by AM noise from the Deeping St Nicholas wind farm, it is now possible for a retrospective AM condition to be applied. She is suing the wind farm owners for damages.

"suing the wind farm owners for damages"

That should concentrate a few minds. Where's Judge John Deed when you need him.. :-)

John Shade, many thanks. I have added to http://cartoonsbyjosh.spreadshirt.co.uk/

Many thanks, finally some sleep!

I've said for years the noise pollution is unacceptable, and its not only the audible; windpower has low frequency vibrations that I believe may be even more damaging. The best answer an alarmist gave me for my objections was to site windmills at sea.

Save the whales. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I have been looking for something tried and tested to plagiarise from this modern world of sound bites, slogans and sloppy thinking. My preference would be to go from slogan to 'toon.

Is there a suitable pic that would project a simple slogan like: "PRO-SCIENCE"? I'm too close to the wood to see the trees.

I seem to recall a picture/cartoon comparing the impact of a fracking well to a wind turbine I think that may be suitable if anyone can locate it ?

Jul 19, 2014 at 12:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterRoss Lea

I found it. It's called "Fact sheet No.1" by Josh (who else !)

Jul 19, 2014 at 12:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterRoss Lea

Wind power is a big, ugly mistake, but this artist is also a fossil fuel shill and portrays buffoons like "Lord" Monckton as reasonable. The anti-wind movement doesn't need this misguided publicity, including the likes of Trump.

There is no abiotic oil and shale is a last-ditch struggle, not a victory over resource finitude. Short attention spans ignore historical peaking in many oil-producing nations, and pretend it can never happen to Ghawar, etc. The U.S. alone burns a billion barrels in about 50 days, so don't get dazzled by "big, new finds."

People need to realize that wind power and fossil fuels are wedded to each other. It's ALL a problem, not just A vs. B as a solution. The only real fix is degrowth and frugal living, but that doesn't sell well.
