I always thought Mann was against fossil fuels, but perhaps I'm mistaken. The sudden outbreak of climate detente has been prompted by their comments in this interview.
Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, said the shift away from coal is reason for "cautious optimism" about potential ways to deal with climate change. He said it demonstrates that "ultimately people follow their wallets" on global warming.
"There's a very clear lesson here. What it shows is that if you make a cleaner energy source cheaper, you will displace dirtier sources," said Roger Pielke Jr., a climate expert at the University of Colorado.
While Pielke is also quoted as saying that shale is only an interim fix, we should probably welcome this outbreak of realism.

Mann's welcoming the fall in CO2 because he will be relying on it later to explain the lack of recent warming. All that will be required by Mann et al will be a little bit of historical revisionism to shift the relationship between global temperatures and shale gas to make the CO2 drop appear more causal.
The "outbreak of realism" was totally unexpected. Maybe he is moving to the stage of negotiation.
This is called the "Monbiot Gambit".
Personally, I will not rest easy until , historically, they are both bracketed with Prof. Lysenko.

And if you make a cleaner energy source more expensive you'll need government money and coercion to displace dirtier sources.

Methinks Herr Doktor Mann's Damascene conversion and embrace of the natural gas discovered, produced and delivered cheaply and efficiently by Lucifer's appointed agents on earth rings hollow.
Mann also thinks climate models vastly overstate warming, and that there is an unknown negative feedback yet to be found.
"shale is only an interim fix": everything is only interim until the ice returns.

Does not everyone know in their heart that there can be no significant change in our use of fossil fuels without a massive collapse of population and society? Any new energy sources are decades away, and nobody is going to stop eating, heating, driving and flying. This is all one big silly game and no one, including Michael Mann, gives a damn about global warming other than as a means to further their career and increase their wealth.
