Enforcing the dogma

Over the weekend, news emerged that the decision by French weatherman Philippe Verdier to come out as a sceptic has resulted in swift retribution.

The Head of Weather France 2, away from the antenna to its challenges to the consequences of global warming, aired Saturday night, a video claiming he was fired by the public channel.

Last year, Roy Spencer was widely criticised for referring to global warming Nazis. But as the list of those who have lost their jobs for questioning the orthodoxy grows, you have to ask yourself, was Spencer wrong?

In related news another weatherman has announced that he is not a sceptic any longer.

Greg Fishel was once a Limbaugh-loving climate skeptic. Now he’s fighting global warming.

You can see why that might be an attractive option.

I thought employment protection laws were such that it was virtually impossible to get fired in France.

This is obscene.

Just when is this madness going to end?

If the government in france wants you dismissed you will be dismissed. Sakozy had a particularly difficult interview with a TV guy, didn't like one bit and within a few weeks he was dismissed. We say démissionné

I am more surprised that journalist's union (syndicat) hasn't gone on strike to defend their freedom of speech..

You can see a short video of Verdier announcing his dismissal (subtitled in English) at http://www.skyfall.fr/?p=1679

there's been some disquiet expressed in comments that the video is very much a publicity stunt for his book. Note that Verdier is not sceptical about the effects of climate change, but simply critical of the green bandwagon and the government pressure to spin the weather reporting in the run up to COP21. One commenter says Verdier in his book even says the government isn't doing enough to counter global warming. More details as the story develops at

What with #NOAAgate (NOAA refusing to defend their warming adjustments to their oversight committee), with the gag on NOAA staff, with NASA repeatedly caught out with their own warming adjustments, then the surprising NASA study showing ice in Antarctic is growing and there is no evidence of warming there.

This doesn't make the French government's actions look at all good. It is a blatant political attack aimed at preventing free speech and preventing the truth coming out.

This may have had something to do with his change of heart...

...But when the former head of the American Meteorological Society contacted me and said I think we gotta have this be a guest commentary for the Capital Weather Gang on The Washington Post, ...

' Limbaugh-loving climate skeptic', you know how extreme these people are by the fact that Limbaugh is and has never been a 'climate skeptic ' His crime is that of a 'heretic' in that he fails to 'have faith' in a the right and unquestioning way .
In this 'the cause ' carries on the old tradition within religion, of treating those that are 'believers ' but fail the orthodoxy test worse than those that don't believe at all.

What ever it is , it certainly is not 'science' in any meaningful way .

There is a very similar tactic being played out in the parliamentary Labour Party. For years Jeremy Corbyn was tolerated by the moderates who controlled Labour, but now Corbyn is wielding the power, there is no quid pro quo - the moderates are experiencing significant hostility. The current favourite epithet is "Tory-lite" or even just "Tory" (akin to "denier") with threats of de-selection that I believe will soon turn into reality.

This is going back to the days of the ethos of robber barons, or the USSR, where if you did not obey you did not eat; the modern equivalent being loss of livelihood. Green ideology is not a religion, it is a substitute for religion. But an ideology that almost fills the God-shaped hole in us, that does not have an omnipotent God as a check on human extremes, is a very dangerous thing, and not easily defeated.

"...was Spencer wrong?"

"Nein!"

Don't you recall hearing Rush Limbaugh declare that a Journal of Geoclimatic Studies paper on ' Benthic Bacteria ' proved global warming stemmed not from CO2, but bacteria burping methane in the depths of the sea. ?

Rush's performance presented only one minor problem: there is no Journal of Geoclimatic Studies, something Spencer strove mightily to communicate .Here's the memo the long suffering climatologist posted the following day :

RE: GLOBAL WARMING STUDY HOAX
Yesterday (11/7/07), a "research study" was circulating on the internet which claimed to have found the "real" reason for global warming. Even though the hoax was quite elaborate, and the paper looked genuine, a little digging revealed that the authors, research center, and even the scientific journal the study was published in, did not exist.
I sent an e-mail to Rush about the issue regarding the hoax, with a copy of the "research study." Unfortunately...he thought that I was calling global warming a hoax, rather than the study

O/T but it just occurred to be that using the words bordel du climat for COP21 is entirely appropriate on rather a lot of levels...

Even warmists won't be able to argue that away :-)

Nov 3, 2015 at 12:06 AM | Registered Commentertomo

Ironic @Tomo that "maison de tolérance" is one french word for brothel

"Bordel is more commonly used to describe a large mess" (stinking mess! shambles! Chaos). "An example would be: Range ta chambre. C’est le bordel. Clean your room. It’s a mess."

I have a feeling that for an actual brothel some other slang phrase is more often used
salon de massage ...maybe
so climate brothel = Grand salon de massage de information

Careful @Russel your masters won't keep paying you the turnips if your propaganda is of such low quality.
"the hoaxers succeeded in fooling Rush for some minutes before he caught it."
James Lewis was precisely right in calling it a black ops job.
Wayback In 2007 David Thorpe said

"It's been a busy time. I published a spoof website in an effort to smoke out some climate change sceptics - not genuine ones, but ones who are highly vocal and yet do not understand the science. It consisted of a fake scientific journal, the Journal of Geoclimatic Studies, and a fake editorial and paper, aiming to 'prove' that global warming was caused by bacteria, not humans. It launched Wed. night and achieved notoriety within hours. I was beseiged with calls from Science magazine, Nature and Reuters. Several people were fooled but not for long as it was pretty easy to spot the spoof nature of it - all the names were made up."
Benny Peiser was fooled only very briefly; he sent out a hoax warning an hour later)
source in 2007
See @Russel you shouldn't automatically take things at face value; that's what being a skeptic is all about.
Some mainstream media people were caught out, but most skeptics weren't.

"Even Rush didn't exactly "fall" for it. He misinterpreted a warning from Roy Spencer (whom he trusts, for good reason, since Spencer is very reliable) as an endorsement. Otherwise it's unlikely he would have jumped on it without verification."

Stewgreen, what part of 4δ161x Λ³Жญ5,6,1,8Φ-4 = {(ΣΨ²Њyt3-14๖P9) x 49}/2β x ⅜kxgt-§ don't you understand?

That's a verbatim sample of the pure gibberish Limbaugh swallowed in the Benthic bacteria fiasco.

Like Delingpole, Rush puts a scientific foot in his atmospheric mouth on a regular basis , witnesss his effort to shred the Montreal Convention by telling millions ozone depletion stems not from freons, but an Antarctic volcano whose chlorine output he exaggerated by more than four orders of magnitude.

I already answered that above.
So you are wasting your breath mate.

Russell

The ozone hole is apparently persisting without support from CHCs ?

Would that be a yes or a no?

Has this been investigated / explained?

Is there a robustly evidenced explanation?

Nov 3, 2015 at 11:08 AM | Registered Commentertomo

Tomo the nuance-challenged :
No: the 'hole' has shrunk , but not dissapeared beacuse long-lived CFC's persist in the stratosphere., and chlorine and bromine from natural and anthropogenic sources continues to be seasonally concentrated in the polar vortex, causing ozone depletion each polar spring.

Yes
Yes

stewgreen: Here's the latest ( november 2 2015) word from Spencer and Co at UAH:

"In the Northern Hemisphere, October 2015 registered the third largest deviation from seasonal norms in the 443 month satellite temperature record, making it the third “warmest” month in the Northern Hemisphere since December 1978. October 2015 trailed only April 1998 (+0.85 C) and February 1998 (0.69 C) as the “warmest” month in the Northern Hemisphere.

“We thought this El Niño had the potential to be a record setter for some of the quantities we track, and it isn’t disappointing,” Christy said. “Not only is this a strong El Niño, but the transient warming we see from it is superimposed on top of the slowly rising global base temperature."

"inspired by a climate workshop he attended in Beaufort this month, plus research from his trip to Alaska's Barrow Observatory in March."

Sounds like he never thought about it very clearly. No wonder he assumes that other people are as foolish and shallow as he was.
