Saudi snow

A reader in Saudi Arabia send this picture which was taken recently in the north of that country.

The naughty thing doesn't seem to be conforming to the local sumptuary laws.

Also a danger of breaching the Muslim ban on depicting human shapes in religion. I wouldn't put it past the Religious Police to claim someone was worshipping Santa Claus....

The Lord will pass judgement on it, so there is no need for mankind to do anything about it

Anyway if they did, let he/she "who is without sin" cast the first snowball.

(The snow-woman is not haram,..she'd only be haram if she left the house dressed provactively..The rules don't apply when you are only with your own family at your own home.)

Just phoned the local rag to tell them we are warmer than Saudi Arabia. What a scorcher !

Dec 13, 2015 at 4:58 PM | Unregistered Commenteresmiff

It also doesn't look appropriately dressed.

At least it's not driving.

What a shame that it wasn't left by the side of the road and the Mutaween summoned and recorded on hidden cameras....

It is true what they say about sceptics taking things out of context.

David Viner's full quote was: "Children won't know what snow is - unless they live in Saudi Arabia!"

There has been snow in the uplands of Tabuk since Ptolemy's day.

The Wiki notes :
"Temperatures in the summer are between 26 and 46 °C, while in winter they are between −4 and 18°C, with widespread frosts.

Snowing is common, with temperatures reaching low −6 °C in some winters. Rainfall in Tabuk Area falls in the winter months from November to March, and precipitation ranges between 50 and 150 mm, with some not uncommon snow every 3–4 years."

We never see a snowman that good-looking in UK

Maybe I'm cynical but I question the provenance of this photograph.

But I see nothing exceptional in the occasional occurrence of snow in the KSA.

Floods in Cumbria - CLIMATE CHANGE!

Snow in Saudi - WEATHER!

Funny, innit?

Dec 13, 2015 at 9:13 PM | Registered Commenterjamesp

I like that snowgirls in Saudi are properly blinged up. Back in the UK, they have to make do with coal and carrots...

You guys are so gullible. Less Breitbart and more Wikipedia.

Dec 13, 2015 at 10:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterAila

A snow event like this in Saudi Arabia is wholly consistent with climate change.

I much prefer Guido's snowman. (Apologies for graphic content)

Are Saudi ladies allowed to make snow replicas of the human kind? If it has been made by a male sculptor, it must have been modelled on a close family relative, probably a wife?

Dec 13, 2015 at 11:54 PM | Unregistered Commentergolf charlie

I guess snowmen are the only men who have a reliable solution to problems with erectile dysfunction, at least during winter months. ^.^

NOT "taken recently" of course.
It's not exactly all over the net but the first genuine report of this photo seems January 10th
and on this Montage of snowmen labelled as the bride.

What is it with alarmists like Aila, who always seem to think they are smarter than those who do not agree with them:

Yes of course it did snow and TV news show people making snowmen etc.
but not that particular snowman.
This year is an El Nino, maybe next year it won't snow much, but i will before 5 years are up.

Dec 14, 2015 at 10:16 AM | Unregistered CommenterRussell

Russell, sorry to have offended your feelings but I was not referring to Wikipedia as such, only climate related and other politically debated issues, where Wikipedia is notoriously unreliable. Why the need to attack the messenger?

Dec 14, 2015 at 10:42 AM | Unregistered CommenterPethefin

How embarrassing for Aila and Russell, that they got caught singing discordantly from different hymn sheets... There'll be a few strong words spoken under their bridge, I reckon.

Bish, assuming what you wrote is correct, that a reader in Saudi Arabia send this picture which was taken recently in the north of that country, then I suggest you need to check your sources more carefully, as that picture has been around at least since last January.

When the ice lay round about
Deep crisp and uneven
Brightly shone those loon that night
Though the fast ice was cruel
When a ship of fools came in sight
